The coat of the Persian is unique among cats because of its length and density. This breed has over three times the length of hair as the domestic short hair cat. In fact, if all of its hairs were placed end to end, it would make up 230 miles of hair! Underneath the coat, the skin of this breed is also very sensitive.
The Persian's coat requires regular grooming and optimum nutrition to remain healthy. The cat should receive routine maintenance by a professional groomer to keep the coat in good condition. Frequent attention can prevent matting, as well as reduce the risk of skin problems.
The proper nutrition is also important to provide lustrous coat and healthy skin. Persians must have an adequate amount of high quality protein to support the growth of their dense coat. Other nutrients such as omega 3 and 6 fatty acids promote overall coat condition and reduce inflammation in the skin. B vitamins help maintain the integrity of the skin as a barrier, while dietary zinc aids in the regeneration of skin cells.
A special coat requires special care. With frequent grooming and proper nutrition, the unique coat of the Persian can look its best.
